One of my favorite statements from this week in Paris was made by Cécile Faraud of C40 Cities at the World Green Building Council summit. We must stop business for business’ sake and building for building’s sake. We have to building what people need. What and how much DO we need? How do we make the most of what we already have? It’s clear that embracing the concept of #sufficiency is fundamental to any equitable path forward within the planetary boundaries of our earth. Thanks Lisa Richmond and Lloyd Alter for your advocacy on this topic. I hope it becomes increasingly present in our building sector conversations.#sustainablearchitecture #buildforclimate #buildingreuseisclimateaction

From Smart Growth America: "Smart Growth America helped organize a coalitionthat urgedthe Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to allow climate funds to go towards adaptive reuse projects in location-efficient areas. The decision by the EPA to grant this funding is a climate justice win." While focused on rural areas, this action enables more federal dollars to be funneled toward the reuse of existing buildings in Main Street-style areas, and recognizes again that reusing existing buildings typically requires fewer carbon emissions than new construction. #thegreenestbuilding #preservation #adaptivereuse #climateresilience #usewhatwehave

Abby Osborne, chair of the Utah Inland Port Authority board, emphasized at our board meeting yesterday the agency's unwavering commitment to collaboration, community engagement, and environmental stewardship. "But every area that we have identified is in collaboration with the local community. And is industry focused on what that local community needs and wants," Osborne highlighted. This sentiment underscores the Port Authority's dedication to prioritizing the voices and needs of local communities in its development initiatives. Instead of merely serving as a tool for developers, the authority actively engages with community stakeholders to ensure that growth aligns with the desires and necessities of the people it serves.Osborne further emphasized the environmental consciousness guiding their actions, stating, "All with the environment in mind. And making sure that we are doing our part." This commitment is pivotal in an era where sustainable development isn't just a buzzword but a necessity. By integrating environmental considerations into their strategies, the Utah Inland Port Authority aims to create a balance between economic growth and ecological preservation.Highlighting the importance of their role, Osborne pointed out the potential consequences if left solely to developers: "We don't know what would happen at those areas. It would just be local land use and it would just be up to the developer who wants the lands." The authority's proactive approach ensures that development decisions are not left to chance but are instead guided by a structured, community-centric, and environmentally conscious framework.

Exploring ESMERALDA's role in land restorationLast week we wrote about the ongoing United Nations Decade of Ecosystem Restoration. And as the world rallies around this initiative, the question arises: How does ESMERALDA fit into this global effort? ESMERALDA aims to support the pursuit of Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN), in line with the UN's broader objectives, by promoting practices that are socially, environmentally and financially sustainable. While ESMERALDA's methods differ from traditional land restoration efforts, our approach is based on careful consideration and adaptability. Here's a closer look at how we try to make a difference:📏 Scale: Through our TRACKER platform and collaboration with knowledgeable partners in the field, ESMERALDA seeks to engage in land restoration projects that are significantly larger than typical efforts, covering areas of more than 100,000 hectares. We already had the occasion in the preparation of a project to gain experience in effective stakeholder engagement in complex environments.💰 Sustainable funding solutions: Recognising the limitations of traditional methods of funding land restoration, which often rely heavily on finite public grants, ESMERALDA is exploring alternative financing models. By covering the up-front costs of feasibility studies and project planning, we aim to attract private investment by presenting so-called bankable projects that offer valuable carbon offset opportunities or supply chains for high quality commodities. This approach ensures project sustainability beyond the initial funding period by leveraging private investments.🔭 Prioritising transparency and accountability: The challenge of tracking and reporting on the progress of LDN projects has been a barrier for large scale projects in the past. With the development of the TRACKER platform, ESMERALDA is working to improve the way project results are monitored and shared, with the aim of building trust and facilitating better engagement with all stakeholders. After all, there are huge investments involved. In line with the principles of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD ) and the spirit of cooperation embodied by ESMERALDA, we welcome partnerships and support from across the global community. We strongly believe that by working together, we can meet the challenges of land degradation and contribute to a sustainable future for our planet.#SustainableDevelopment#GlobalImpact#remotesensing#environment#sustainablefinance#ecosystemrestoration#landegradationneutralityAlain RetiereHinrich Paulsen 🇪🇺Jürgen Ackermann Markus Neteler Michel Ackermann Nicolas Ackermann Philippe GISQUETOliver Herrmann
