During this time, he gave Jef Raskin the go-ahead to begin implementing his 1979 plan to design what would become the Macintosh. He also assisted the company in obtaining incorporation status.

Markkula, as a trained engineer, possessed some technical abilities that enabled him to write a number of early Apple II programs and test the beta for Apple hard and software. Markkula created one of the first three Apple III programs.
