One of the perks of eating low carbs is that it’s really easy to accommodate. On most nights I can just skip the carbs and eat the same veggies and protein that everyone else is eating. For those rare times that I do have to make something completely separate for myself, my go-to is a foil packet dinner.

FAQs

How far in advance can you make foil packets? ›

Prepare Hobo Foil Packets according to the directions and seal up the packets. Throw them in the cooler and they'll be ready to go when it's time to put them on a grill or coals over a campfire. I don't recommend making these more than a day in advance.

Is steak OK for keto diet? ›

Steak is perfect for the keto diet because of its abundance of healthy fat, protein, and essential micronutrients. In fact, nutritionists consider it the best fat and protein source for keto dieters. The best part is that there are many cuts to choose from, almost all of which contain zero carbohydrates.

Can I freeze uncooked foil packets? ›

Freeze the packets: Stack the packets on top of each other and slide them into a gallon-sized zip-top freezer bag. Press out as much air as possible and seal the bag. Freeze for up to 2 months.

How do you make a good foil packet? ›

Pull out an extra-long length of aluminum foil and fold it in half so you've got a double layer. Place your ingredients in the center, then pull over one side, folding the edges to seal. Then fold the remaining two edges. Don't seal the packet too tightly: you want to leave some room for the steam to expand.

Do you have to flip foil packets on the grill? ›

There's usually no need to even flip the foil packets during grilling. Once your meal is cooked through, you can serve straight from the packet (less dishes!) or slide each serving onto a plate or bowl.

What temperature do you grill foil packets? ›

Continue to fold downwards until the foil lies flat against the packet's top. Then, use the same folding method to bring the short sides inward. When all the packets are sealed, preheat the grill or the oven for medium to medium-high heat, about 400 to 425°F. Add the packets and cook away!

Do you flip foil packets on the grill? ›

Grill the packets over (or in the coals of) an open fire flipping them once until the meat is cooked to desired doneness, about 20 to 25 minutes total. Can also be baked in the oven. Carefully open each foil packet to let steam release before eating.

Should I wrap my steak in foil? ›

Pat: Aluminum foil keeps some of the heat in, but don't wrap it tightly or you will lose the crust. I would cover any steak that is over 1 1/2-inches thick. Anything less thick could overcook the steak during resting, especially if the foil is tightly wrapped. It should always be a loose tent.

Does foil in the bottom of the oven affect cooking? ›

A layer of foil will block air flow and circulation which will cause malfunction of the heating elements of the appliance. Putting foil on the bottom of a gas oven can interfere with the flame, leading to improperly cooked food and fluctuating internal temperatures.

Why is aluminum foil not hot when you take it out of the oven? ›

It has a very low thermal mass as a result; a sheet of foil has very little volume and can't hold onto much heat. Combine this with the significant surface area of a sheet of foil (relative to its volume) and any heat stored in the foil gets radiated away very quickly when taken out of the oven.

How many eggs a day on a keto diet? ›

It's totally fine and safe to eat up to 6 eggs a day while on the keto diet. You can consume even more eggs per day occasionally, as long as you make sure that you eat your greens, healthy fats and proteins from other sources.

Which cheese is best for keto? ›

The best keto cheeses include cheddar, Gouda, goat cheese, and blue cheese, while the worst are cottage cheese and low fat and processed varieties. If you're following the keto diet or know someone who is, be sure to keep these cheeses in mind to promote ketosis and meet dietary goals.

What fruit is keto-friendly? ›

Keto fruits by definition are low in carbohydrates. You still need to exercise portion control with most keto-friendly fruits to be within the limits of a keto diet. Keto-friendly fruits include avocados, watermelon, strawberries, lemons, tomatoes, raspberries, peaches, cantaloupe, star fruit, and blackberries.

Can you prep foil packets ahead of time? ›

Yes! you can make your foil packets ahead of time and store in cooler or fridge. Just be sure to use heavy duty aluminum foil, and if the ingredients are heavy double up on the foil. Making the packets ahead of time is such a time saver and makes dinner prep so easy.

Can you make tinfoil dinners ahead of time? ›

Tin foil dinners can be assembled ahead of time and stored in the fridge or cooler until you're ready to cook. I actually prefer to assemble them at home before we leave for camping. That way it makes cooking at camp so much easier. Make sure they stay properly chilled and try to use them within a few days of assembly.

Does wrapping produce in foil keep it fresh? ›

The reason why al foil works so well at keeping food fresher for longer is because the foil protects the food from airborne bacteria and fungi spores, and it helps to retain moisture so the food doesn't dry out as quickly. It also works well with food in the freezer as it's more airtight around the food.

How long do foil trays keep food warm? ›

Aluminum Foil

Just keep in mind the foil will keep in the heat for only about 30 minutes or so. If you are trying to keep a roast, steak, or whole bird warm, tenting with aluminum foil while it rests will benefit the meat in two ways: It will keep it at a warm temperature while allowing the juices to redistribute.
