Huggy Wuggy

Arguably the mascot of the franchise at this point, Experiment 1170, or Huggy Wuggy, is not only the first toy we meet during our adventures through the Playtime Co. factory but also one of the most vicious. This 18ft blue and yellow monster is one of the key experiments created during the Bigger Bodies Initiative, where it was used as a security measure for the factory.

To know the history of Huggy Wuggy, it's worth first understanding the toy's relevancy to the company. The Huggy Wuggy brand was introduced towards the end of Playcare's history, with the company creating the doll in the mid-80s. It was a breakout success, eventually spawning a female counterpart in Kissy Missy, both of which were some of Playtime's most beloved products.

Following its creation, the doctor behind the Bigger Bodies Initiative, Harley Sawyer, elected to create a giant, living version of Huggy Wuggy using the body parts of an unknown orphan from Playcare. As we learn from Leith Pierre's tape in the first chapter, after he was created, Huggy was used as security. He was placed in the main lobby of the Playtime Factory, where he watched over the entrance, keeping an eye on guests and employees.

In the log on The Prototype that we hear during the conclusion of Chapter 2, we learn that Huggy was initially a very obedient creation. The tape specifically calls him the "optimal outcome" of the Bigger Bodies experiments, noting that he showed "sufficient intelligence with maximum obedience." However, this all changed after he began communicating with The Prototype.

Huggy Wuggy and The Prototype

After the events in the tape we hear at the end of Chapter 2, we learn that Huggy Wuggy's unquestioning obedience eventually began to falter.

Huggy began to reject Playtime, almost as though he'd become obedient to a new master. This all led to an escape attempt in 1992, which is depicted in the RESTRICTED_disappearance tape posted on Mob Entertainment's official YouTube channel. In the tape, we learn that Huggy managed to escape the factory through an open delivery bay shutter, running half a mile from the grounds and into a nearby forest.

Playtime operatives followed Huggy, who retaliated by murdering 11 of his pursuers. Towards the end of this clip, Huggy is seen standing outside a mysterious house. Who's house this was and why he fled there is unknown, although we do know that he was eventually returned to Playtime Co. where he continued to serve as its secret security measure.

Huggy's sudden rebelling against Playtime Co. appears to be the work of one entity: The Prototype. It seems The Prototype began to coerce and recruit Huggy, ordering him and becoming his new master. As we learn throughout all three chapters and Poppy Playtime's multiplayer spin-off, Project Playtime, Huggy and The Prototype have a peculiar connection. In a lot of ways, Huggy appears to be The Prototype's enforcer, and it's made clear that the two share an almost telepathic connection.

During Project Playtime's monster tutorial, the player takes on the role of Huggy Wuggy. During this segment, Huggy is spoken to by The Prototype, although the voice appears to be entirely in his head. The Prototype gives him commands and Huggy obeys, attacking relentlessly in service of his master.

Considering we know that Huggy was a huge part of the Hour of Joy, the company-wide massacre organized by The Prototype, it appears he's still a very obedient monster but serves under a new master.

The Events of Poppy Playtime

We initially meet Huggy during the events of Poppy Playtime Chapter 1, where he still retains his position as the watchful eye of the company, waiting in the lobby for the player to arrive.

When they do, Huggy stalks them through the facility before eventually attacking, pursuing them relentlessly through the ventilation shafts of the Make-A-Friend factory. The chase ends when the player takes advantage of Huggy's aggression, luring him to a flimsy walkway and then using a box to crush it, sending him careening down into the abyss below.

We aren't sure whether or not Huggy died from the fall, and there's evidence to support both sides. Poppy tells us in Chapter 3 "You killed Huggy," implying that he is indeed dead. However, in Chapter 2, we can find Huggy's blood and fur on the walls of the small factory in the Water Treatment plant. If this is where he landed, there's no body lying at the bottom, implying he's potentially licking his wounds and will return in future chapters.

Huggy is a major part of The Prototype's rule over the factory and a seemingly crucial character to the world of Poppy Playtime. There's always the chance he'll return, especially if we go back to the age-old rule: if you don't see a body then always assume the character is still alive and kicking.
