I have no idea what I'm supposed to be doing. How do I even make progress?
All that seems to be happening is the war exhaustion numbers on both sides increase, and the "achieve war goals" button is always a red X.
I hate that subject empires influences the victory score.

If you declare a Secret Fealty War, the Vassals who pledged themselves to you should be fighting on your side.
Can we get some context? A screenshot of the war participants, who declared the war, etc.

An AI empire has several vassals, who have pledged secret fealty to me. Because of their vassals boosting their victory score number, they're going to win at the end-game year. Usually I disable victory altogether, but I want the achievement for winning as a machine uprising.
So, to knock this empire off of the top spot, I'm declaring an allegiance war. I declare war... but now what do I do? I've never bothered with warfare in Stellaris before so I don't know the first thing about it.
I'm at war with this empire, and their vassals have joined the fight on my side, but what do I need to do to actually win and claim their vassals as my own, and get those sweet score-boosting numbers?
I tried sending my fleets into their territory, the starbases and outposts change to green, although the galaxy map's territory borders don't change, but the value on the "achieve war goal" button in the war screen never seems to change in my favour to a point where I can select it. All the time, both of our war exhaustion values are creeping up and I have no idea what I'm doing, let alone what I'm doing wrong.

Your gonna need armies to invade the enemies planets. Having space is the hardest part, but until the planets are occupied it's usually not considered as impactful to the war score

To win a secret fealty war you have to essentially conquer every single system and planet of your enemies (the overlord empire and any allies on his side of the war), especially making sure that you get the claims of those who swore secret fealty to you.
Once you have done that the war should be automatically ended and you get your new vassals as well as any of their claimed systems with an additional +2.5 loyalty change/mo. for 10 years.

you have achive war goals, that mean you have to conquer all enemy planets or just get OVERWHELMED fleet, but rly OVERWHELMED
the AI count war goals like this:
- fleet power diffrence
- number of system conquered
- number of planet conquered
- war exhaustion

Wow, that all sounds far too complicated.
Fortunately, I figured out a workaround. I established a Hegemony federation with another empire and their singular vassal, gave my victory rival a stupidly generous subjugation offer to counteract their -800 for being an overlord, then immediately released them and all four of their vassals (which were now MY vassals) before the month rolled over and I went bankrupt.
Now every empire in my tiny galaxy is a member of my hegemony, so they can't make any other empires their vassals, and I'm in my rightful place at the top of the score board. But just to rub it in, I'm going to kick each of them out of my Hegemony one by one, and then subjugate them myself.
Pacifism rules.

That's usually true with the war system in this game, but I've won a Secret Fealty War without conquering too much.
Granted, I was Vastly more powerful than they were, they ended up just surrendering.
It's only happened one time (since every other time a Vassal has pledged Secret Fealty to me, I've been friendly with their Overlord), but I believe the required victory score is lower than most other Casus Bellis.
But if the enemy Overlord has allies, yeah, you're in for a grind.
