Bottom Line

The three-pearlFestival Village is a family friendly hotel with all-inclusive plans that's walking distance of three beaches. All 128 apartments have terraces and kitchens, but decor is basic and dated. Entertainment gets solid marks here, and there are plenty of activities like water polo, arts and crafts, games, and a mini-disco to keep kids busy. The hotel also is an outdoor pool area with a kids' pool, a pool bar, and hot tub. The buffet-style restaurant serves average Spanish and international cuisine, and several amenities and services come with extra fees. Guests looking for a little more style in their holiday may want to consider the H10 Salauris Palace.

A family-oriented hotel with lively vibe and bland style

Salou may very well be home to the most average of the world's average hotels, and like the rest of the three-pearl options crammed into this part of Catalonia, Festival Village won't win any awards for style or ambience. Instead, expect a busy, family-friendly hotel that caters to an abundance of U.K. holiday-makers looking for reasonable rates and proximity to the Mediterranean. The large lobby is filled with light and marble, and there are cushioned wicker seating islands set throughout, but the look is austere. The on-site buffet restaurant, with white tablecloths, high-back brown leather chairs, and floor-to-ceiling windows, is a busy hub of guests coming and going -- there is also a lovely outdoor terrace with umbrella-shaded seating. The Night Bar,whose offerings range from quizzes to karaoke, resembles a food court, with its sea of white-plastic chairs set around small square wood-topped tables. The pool area, outdoor bar, and hot tub provide more areas where guests can gather and mingle outside their apartments. While design may be an afterthought here, the hotel is lively in high season, and a good deal of entertainment keeps families occupied until well into the night. Couples looking for a romantic escape, though, will want to consider hotels that are not in Salou.

NecropolisPaleocristiana de Tarragona, a national archaeological museum with more than 2,000 tombs dating back to the third century,is a 15-minutedrive from the hotel. It's an eight-minute drive to Llevant Beach, which is Salou's largest and has a wide selection of restaurants and shops, plus a large waterfront promenade. The Gaudi Center Reus, which is dedicatedto the famous Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi (who was born in Reus), is a 25-minute drive from thehotel. Rooms

Basic apartments with kitchens and balconies

The hotel has 128 self-contained, basic units, include One- and Two-Bedroom apartments, and Suites, which are the same size as the Two-Bedroom Apartments but have additionalbathrooms. The look is not contemporary and apartments are downright spartan, with floral patterned bedspreads that match curtains and upholstery alongside peach tiled floors, and faded wall art. Wood laminate furniture comes in warm tones, but has a dorm-like quality to it. All units feature kitchens, which include microwaves,stove-top ranges, tea- and coffee-making facilities, and mini-fridges, and have living rooms plus balconies orterraces. Rooms also include old tube-style TVs and air-conditioning. Expect to pay fees or deposits to use things like Wi-Fi and safes. The white-tile bathrooms with peach-patterned trim are as no-frills as the rooms, with shower/ tub combos and bidets. Counter space is limited. Keep in mind that while there is daily housekeeping, linens are only changed twice per week and kitchens will not be cleaned during a stay here.
