15 Quilts to Upgrade Your Bedding This Season (2024)

Quilts are practical bed covers that provide extra warmth and tie together your bed styling. And while you may think of quilts as having a more traditional look, today, there are plenty of other styles to choose from—whether you prefer a minimal aesthetic or a more bohemian-inspired design.

When it comes to choosing a quilt, the material is one of the most important considerations—after all, this is what makes a quilt, a quilt. "A quilt is is a bit stiffer and less malleable than blankets or duvets," says Anki Spets, bedding designer and founder of Area Home. Depending on your look, Spets is partial to materials like linen and cotton, which are as functional as they are easy on the eyes. However, "any stable material will work so long as it can handle the stitching and keep the fill in place," she adds.

Keeping this in mind, we researched and tested some of the top quilts on the market, considering their overall quality, texture, breathability, and design. No matter your budget or style preferences, the following options proved to be the best of the best.

Brooklinen Lightweight Quilt Review

What We Like

  • Detailed stitching

  • Lightweight, yet warm

  • Soft

What We Don't Like

  • Not easy to machine wash

  • Limited color range

If you feel like Goldilocks when it comes to bedding, then the Brooklinen Lightweight Quilt may be just right: Not too heavy and not too light. This quilt is constructed from long-staple cotton, meaning the fibers are extra strong and soft. We used this quilt at home and found it was ideal to use on its own during warmer nights and it still provided that cocoon feeling that comforters offer. It may be slightly too warm for especially hot nights but it’s the perfect layer to keep at the foot of the bed for when you do get cold.

We followed Brooklinen’s care suggestions for this quilt, which say it can be washed on a warm or cool cycle. Ideally it should be line dried, but we did not have the space for line drying it, so we had to tumble dry it twice for it to be fully dry. It might be best to take this quilt to a laundromat that has larger dryers, especially if you have a compact dryer at home. If you’re not disappointed by the limited, neutral color options then this quilt is the perfect solo or layering piece for your bed.

The Company Store Company Cotton Voile Quilt

15 Quilts to Upgrade Your Bedding This Season (5)

What We Like

  • Lightweight yet cozy

  • Medium-weight drape

  • 22 colors available

What We Don't Like

  • No certifications

Another great option, the Company Store Voile Quilt has a medium weight that's more consistent with the quilts you know and love. It's made of 100 percent cotton and, as the name suggests, features a plain-woven voile-style (ultra-thin) fabric. This fabric differs from other quilting cotton types because it has an ultrasoft, airy finish.

This bedspread is lightweight and breathable yet warm, making it an ideal choice for year-round use. It lays flat and smooths out nicely on the bed, offering a beautiful drape. You can use it in place of a traditional comforter or as an additional layer to your existing bed cover during chilly seasons.

The hand-quilted design offers textural interest while remaining endlessly versatile. We also appreciate that there are over 20 colors available, ranging from navy to jade to crisp white. Different sizes are also available to suit almost any bed. This quilt doesn't carry any key certifications, but all things considered, we think the price is right on point.

Sizes: Twin, full/queen, king | Material: Cotton | Certifications: None | Care: Machine-wash cold, tumble dry

What We Like

  • Scalloped edge

  • Well-made with perfect stitching

  • Good for year-round use

What We Don't Like

  • Cotton voile may pill over time

If you're open to splurging on a luxurious bed cover, the Serena & Lily Baywood Quilt is a great option. Made with a linen-cotton fabric blend, we found this quilt to be soft and welcoming while using it at home. It has a medium weight that's warm enough for cold winter nights but also breathable enough for the summer months (that is if you choose to sleep with it).

We love the oversized scalloped edges and hand-done pick stitching, which give it a charming appeal that would work particularly well in vacation homes and guest rooms. While we wish it was available in more color options, the white and sky blue shades are versatile enough to suit a variety of spaces. After washing this quilt, we did notice some pilling on the cotton voile back, so we recommend only washing this quilt when necessary to prevent added wear. Despite the light coloring, an accidental coffee spill came out without a fuss, which is a bonus for households with pets and kids. To complete the look, you can also opt for the matching sham set, which is sold separately.

Sizes: Twin, full/queen, king/Cal. king | Material: Linen, cotton | Certifications: OEKO-TEX Standard 100 | Care: Machine-wash cold, tumble dry

West Elm Linen Box Stitch Quilt & Shams

15 Quilts to Upgrade Your Bedding This Season (7)

What We Like

  • Sourced from European flax

  • Made in Fair Trade facility

  • Recycled polyester filling

What We Don't Like

  • Limited colors when bundled

Looking for a complete bedding set? West Elm's Linen Box Stitch Quilt comes with two matching pillow shams (or one if you get the twin size), offering more bang for your buck when it comes to its cost. The quilt is available in your choice of 16 colors, too, ranging from warm amber to dusty blue to undyed flax. Unfortunately, you can only purchase the set in three different colors (natural flax, graphite, or terracotta melange), so if you want something brighter, you'll need to purchase the quilt and shams separately from each other.

This linen quilt is made in a Fair Trade facility, and each piece is filled with recycled polyester batting. The exterior features a 100 percent linen shell sourced from high-quality European flax fibers. The simple square quilting pattern is endlessly versatile, and you can expect the linen to get softer with every wash.

Sizes: Twin, full/queen, king | Material: Linen, recycled polyester | Certifications: Fair Trade | Care: Machine-wash cold, tumble dry

Parachute Linen Box Quilt

15 Quilts to Upgrade Your Bedding This Season (8)

What We Like

  • Good for year-round use

  • Good for layering

  • Increasingly soft feel

What We Don't Like

  • Not 100 percent linen

If you're partial to linen bedding, Parachute is a go-to brand for many households. The brand's Linen Box Quilt features a linen surface sourced from Belgian flax fibers, a cotton percale backing, and a recycled polyester batting fill. While it's not 100 percent linen, you can still count on breathability and softness that gets better with every wash.

Like all fabrics from Parachute, this product is OEKO-TEX certified to give you peace of mind knowing your bedding is free of potentially harmful chemicals. It has a nice medium weight that's perfect for winter layering or a summertime bed cover.

Sizes: Twin/twin XL, full/queen, king/Cal king | Material: Linen, cotton, polyester | Certifications: OEKO-TEX Standard 100 | Care: Machine-wash, tumble dry

Coyuchi Pebbled Handstitched Quilt

15 Quilts to Upgrade Your Bedding This Season (9)

Our Ratings

  • Quality

    4.8/5

  • Durability

    4.5/5

  • Value

    3.5/5

What We Like

  • Ideal for hot sleepers

  • Rustic aesthetic

  • Hand-stitched finish

What We Don't Like

  • Limited color options

Coyuchi's Pebbled Organic Quilt is on the thinner side, but it still has a nice weight, and the hand-stitched pebbled texture lends a rustic bedroom aesthetic. Made of certified organic cotton, we especially loved that pet hair didn't cling to this quilt as much as other options we tested.

The non-bulky design makes this quilt a great choice for layering during the winter, and due to the inherent breathability of cotton, it encourages airflow and prevents overheating. That said, be sure to wash it with cold water and tumble dry it on low heat to avoid shrinkage. While the color offerings for this quilt are more minimalist and muted, any of the colors would make for a great background to more vibrant pillows.

Sizes: Full/queen, king, Euro sham | Material: Organic cotton | Certifications: GOTS | Care: Machine-wash gentle, tumble or air-dry

L.L.Bean North Star Patchwork Quilt

15 Quilts to Upgrade Your Bedding This Season (12)

Our Ratings

What We Like

  • Impeccably stitched

  • Vintage charm

  • Soft and breathable

What We Don't Like

  • Not dryer-friendly

  • Only one colorway

If you love the traditional patchwork designs of heirloom quilts, L.L.Bean's North Star Quilt is a great option. We love the nostalgia of this quilt and think it'd be such a sweet addition to a guest cabin or a child's room. Made of 100 percent cotton, this quilt is soft and breathable with a nice drape that's cozy enough for year-round use.

During testing, we found this quilt held up well in the wash, but one drawback is it's not dryer-friendly—air-drying is recommended instead. The pattern has an undeniable old-fashioned charm, but since it only comes in one colorway, it's not the most versatile.

Sizes: Twin, full/queen, king | Material: Cotton | Certifications: None | Care: Machine-wash, air-dry

Anthropologie Rivulets Quilt

15 Quilts to Upgrade Your Bedding This Season (13)

What We Like

  • Handcrafted artisanal quality

  • Striking ruffled design

  • Ultra-soft jersey cotton

What We Don't Like

  • Not machine-washable

For something more decorative yet still cozy, consider the Rivulets Quilt from Anthropologie. Made of ultrasoft and slightly stretchy jersey cotton, this striking piece features tucked and tufted ruffles to add interest and dimension to any space. But thanks to the monochrome design, it's not so over-the-top that it'll look overly busy.

This unique, handcrafted bed cover takes three days to make, according to the product listing. Due to the intricate texture and ruffled embellishments, this quilt is unfortunately not machine-washable (Anthropologie recommends dry-cleaning).

Sizes: Twin, full, queen, king | Material: Cotton | Certifications: None | Care: Dry-clean

Wayfair Basics Reversible Diamond Quilt Set

15 Quilts to Upgrade Your Bedding This Season (14)

What We Like

  • Shams included

  • Soft and wrinkle-resistant

  • Lightweight

What We Don't Like

  • Not the most breathable

We also like the Wayfair Basics Diamond Quilt, especially if you’re looking for bedding that’s versatile. It's made of double-brushed microfiber, an exceedingly soft fabric that resists wrinkling. But as a type of polyester, we should note microfiber isn't as breathable as cotton and linen.

This quilt is conveniently reversible, meaning it features the same diamond tufting pattern on both sides (rather than a different color on each side). You can flip it over or rotate it if one side starts to see wear, giving you a bit of added value. What's more, it comes with a pair of matching shams.

Sizes: Twin/twin XL, full/queen, king/Cal king | Material: Microfiber | Certifications: OEKO-TEX Standard 100 | Care: Machine-wash, tumble dry

Quince European Linen Quilt

15 Quilts to Upgrade Your Bedding This Season (15)

What We Like

  • Variety of colors

  • Free returns for up to 365 days

What We Don't Like

  • May become wrinkled after multiple washes

The Quince European Linen Quilt is a great, lower-price linen option that can be used all year long. It’s on the lower end of pricing for linen bedding, and we love the variety of colors it’s available in. The classic box stitching also ensures that the polyester batting stays evenly distributed throughout the shell.

While this quilt is listed as machine-washable, it’s best to air-dry it or tumble it on a low heat setting. You may find that the linen wrinkles after several washes, but you can carefully steam it to release any texture that develops with use.

Sizes: Twin, full/queen, king/Cal. king | Material: European flax | Certifications: OEKO-TEX Standard 100 | Care: Machine-wash, air-dry or tumble dry

Threshold Channel Stitch Velvet Quilt

15 Quilts to Upgrade Your Bedding This Season (16)

What We Like

  • Textured finish

  • Elevated design

What We Don’t Like

  • No twin size available

A velvet quilt can be a wonderful addition to your bedding during winter months when you’re looking for additional comfort and soft surroundings. We love the natural tones that this Threshold quilt is available in, and the channel stitching creates a plush finish on top of a comforter or sheet set.

This quilt is also machine-washable, so you can refresh it easily without making a trip to the dry cleaners. Unfortunately, this quilt is not sold in a twin size, but you could accomplish an oversized bedding effect with a queen-size quilt on a twin bed.

Sizes: Full/queen, king | Material: Cotton and polyester | Certifications: OEKO-TEX Standard 100 | Care: Machine-wash, tumble dry

Birch Lane Merauke Terin Standard Reversible Quilt Set

15 Quilts to Upgrade Your Bedding This Season (17)

What We Like

  • Classic design

  • Oversized sets available

What We Don’t Like

  • No mention of machine washing

The Birch Lane Merauke Terin quilt set is a beautiful scalloped option with a traditional medallion quilting design. We love that it’s available in over-sized sets for queen and king beds. This quilt would be a beautiful addition to your bed in the summer or could be a year-round option in a guest bedroom when paired with a few blankets.

Unfortunately, there is no mention of machine washing instructions on the product listing, although you can tumble dry it for a quick refresh. All in all, we love the variety of sets available in this design.

Sizes: Twin, queen, king, over size queen, over size king, or day bed | Material: Cotton | Certifications: Not listed | Care: Tumble dry

Garnet Hill Washable Silk Dream Quilt

15 Quilts to Upgrade Your Bedding This Season (18)

What We Like

  • Luxurious texture

  • Hand stitched

What We Don’t Like

  • Must follow wash instructions carefully

Garnet Hill’s Dream Quilt got a major upgrade with the new washable silk design. This quilt has a silk habutai face, which is a more durable type of silk that is known for its soft finish. It can withstand regular washing without wearing down or snagging, but you still have to be mindful of what type of detergent and other washing additives you use with this quilt.

We love the hand-stitched finish and think the self-tie closure on the shams is a charming touch, although you do have to purchase them separately. This quilt allows you to enjoy the best of both worlds with the temperature-regulating quality of silk with the easy-to-wash durability of cotton.

Sizes: Twin, double/queen, king/Cal. king | Material: Silk habutai and cotton | Certifications: Not listed | Care: Machine washable

Pottery Barn Tencel Tufted Quilt

15 Quilts to Upgrade Your Bedding This Season (19)

What We Like

  • Ideal for hot sleepers

  • Reversible for smooth finish

What We Don’t Like

  • Not sold in twin size

If you become easily overheated while sleeping, then the Pottery Barn Tencel Quilt is a wonderful option for its temperature-regulating design. The Tencel Lyocell shell is not only a sustainable alternative to cotton, but its also silky smooth to keep you comfortable at night.

You can even reverse this quilt for a smooth finish similar to comforters, if the tufted finish isn’t your style. Unfortunately, this quilt isn’t sold in a twin size, but you could size up for the full/queen and style your bed in the oversized look.

Sizes: Full/queen, king/Cal. king | Material: TENCEL Lyocell and polyester | Certifications: OEKO-TEX Standard 100 | Care: Machine wash cold and tumble dry low

Bedsure Quilt Set

15 Quilts to Upgrade Your Bedding This Season (20)

What We Like

  • Several color options

  • Durable

  • Several stitch designs

What We Don’t Like

  • Not as warm as other options

If you’re looking for an extra layer to add to your bed in the winter, this quilt from Bedsure is a great choice. While it may not be super warm or weighty on its own, it easily adds enough warmth on super chilly nights.

We love that this quilt is available in over 15 colors and four stitch patterns (weave, geometric, diamond, or flower). The stitching is also very durable so you won’t have to worry about snags from the washing machine.

Sizes: Twin/twin XL, full/queen, king, Cal. king | Material: Polyester | Certifications: Oeko-Tex Standard 100 | Care: Machine washable

Final Verdict

There are dozens of quilt designs available on the market which all appeal to different aesthetics and sleep preferences. The Brooklinen Lightweight Quilt has a light yet cozy feel that's perfect for year-round use. If you're looking for a sustainable synthetic alternative to cotton, the Pottery Barn Tencel Quilt is also a great year-round design with temperature-regulating properties.

How We Tested the Quilts

For this article, we tested more than a dozen quilts in our own homes, where we used each blanket daily. In addition to evaluating the construction and quality of each quilt, we slept with the blankets for several days and washed each one in a standard washing machine. These tests were conducted during the winter, so we were able to evaluate the warmth of each blanket in cold weather.

When testing was complete, each product was scored on its quality, fabric, durability, warmth, effectiveness, and value. These scores were combined with our writers' and editors' research—as well as insights from experts—to put together this list.

What Is the Difference Between a Quilt, Comforter, and Duvet?

With so many bed cover options, it's challenging to know the difference between them and which is best for you and your sleeping preferences.

  • Quilts vs. Coverlets: A quilt is three layers of material stitched together. The stitching that holds the three layers together creates a quilted appearance. A coverlet is essentially a large bed blanket that offers additional warmth during cooler months.
  • Quilts vs. Comforters: Most people are probably familiar with a comforter or duvet, which is a much heavier bed cover compared to a quilt. If you tend to be cold at night, you’re better off shopping for a bed comforter. However, if you want additional bedding layers or you live in a warmer climate, a quilt can offer the same cocooned comfort, without the extra warmth.
  • Because quilts are lined with stitches, the filling is typically held in place in small pockets. Comforters are not usually lined with stitches, so there’s more separation between the outer layer and the inner layer, giving them that fluffy appearance.
  • Quilts are typically constructed from cotton, but you can also find linen options. The interior batting is polyester or cotton.

What to Look for in a Quilt

Material and Temperature Regulation

Quilts can be made of various materials. Fabrics like cotton, linen, bamboo, and lyocell tend to be more breathable and moisture-wicking with thermal-regulating properties, as with the Pottery Barn Tencel Quilt, which is constructed from lyocell fibers that help maximize temperature regulation. You can also find quilts made from microfiber, like the Wayfair Basics Microfiber Reversible Diamond Quilt Set. Microfiber is usually not as breathable, though it's incredibly soft and wrinkle-resistant.

Anki Spets, bedding designer and founder of Area Home, is partial to cotton or linen quilts. However, she says, "Any stable material will work so long as it can handle the stitching and keep the fill in place." In addition to the outer shell, it's essential to consider the batting, or middle layer of a quilt. Most quilts will have polyester or cotton batting. An all-cotton quilt has the added benefit of being very comfortable for practically any season, whereas polyester tends to harbor moisture more; however, a polyester fill can be a more durable option against staining and regular washes.

Weight

You'll also want to consider the weight of a quilt's material in addition to the type. As a multi-layered bed cover with a batting-style fill, quilts are somewhat flat with a drapey quality. They're often slightly heavier than down-filled comforters, but this isn't always the case.

According to Spets, the best quilt for year-round use is "one that is not too heavy in weight." You want it to be cozy enough to keep you warm in the winter, but not so heavy that it traps heat in the summer. If you want the flexibility of keeping this quilt at the end of your bed for any moment, a lighter-weight design may be ideal, as you can use it as an additional layer to your regular bedspread during the chilly months and potentially on its own when the weather heats up.

For winter use, look for a heavier option that'll lock in warmth, like the Anthropologie Rivulets Quilt. The Brooklinen Lightweight Quilt was a wonderful quilt that kept us feeling warm yet not overheated, so it may be a great option for hot sleepers.

15 Quilts to Upgrade Your Bedding This Season (22)

Durability

The life span of a quilt depends on how often it's used. Like comforters and duvets, a bedspread used daily should be replaced every three to five years, as dust mites, stains, odors, and bodily residues can build up over time with regular use.

The sturdiest quilts are often made of long-staple cotton or linen, like the West Elm Linen Box Stitch Quilt. Longer plant fibers offer inherent strength that resists fraying and allows the fabric to last for years—plus, you'll enjoy the added benefit of the linen fabric growing softer with every wash. Many of the quilts in our list also have some form of hand-pick stitching, which is a type of quilt stitching created by hand rather than on a machine. We recommend being extra careful when laundering these quilts—like the Garnett Hill Washable Silk Dream Quilt—and even using them around pets, as they could more easily become snagged.

Decorative quilts that are properly cared for and stored can last several decades—that's how they become family heirlooms. The L.L. Bean Northstar Patchwork Quilt is a lovely heirloom-style quilt reminiscent of patterns and quilts originally sewn by hand.
